Walks Near & Far

Although Dartmoor is our favourite place to venture off for a walk with our black Labrador Misty, being in west Devon Higher Kellacott is ideally placed for accessing a fabulous range of walks, whether long or short, near of further afield.

Here we have featured a few of our favourites, including the nearby Burley Down Wood and many stretches of the South West Coast Path, with spectacular views of the dramatic north Cornish coast and the additional option to have a dip in the sea at certain points. Lydford Gorge is an ever popular destination for guests, with the dramatic steep sides of the gorge and White Lady waterfall.

Fingle Bridge is another favourite, not only for the opportunity of a wild swim in the River Teign, but also the Fingle Bridge Inn for a leisurely drink, generally in the beer garden overlooking the river and the pretty 17th century pack horse bridge.

Burley Down Wood, near Lydford
Burley Down Wood is about 8 miles from Higher Kellacott, heading towards Lydford. There is a small area off the road to park and the woods have a great selection of paths giving access to the various sections of this mixed coniferous and broadleaf woodland.

The Castle Inn at Lydford, just a few miles from here, is a popular inn with good pub food. On route along the West Devon Drive, you will also pass Alder Vineyard, which has shop and kitchen open 9 to 5 from Wednesday to Sunday. Find the details here

Crackington Haven is a pretty beach about 40 minutes from Higher Kellacott, offering access to a west facing beach and the South West Coast Path. There is a very pleasant village with an excellent pub and village shop. The pub faces directly west towards the beach and I'm told that it is excellent for watching a summer sunset whilst enjoying a glass of something chilled!

The postcode for the village car park is EX23 0JG. It is approximately 40 minutes' drive from Kellacott.

This popular walking destination is owned and maintained by the National Trust, and is the deepest river gorge in the South West, with a 30 meter high waterfall. It is possible to walk the length of the gorge and is about a 1 to 1 ½ hour walk, good walking shoes or trainers recommended as it can be slippy at times. The Devil’s Cauldron is a popular feature, but may not be accessed in the winter due to the higher water levels.
